Italy ready to test body scanners on flights to U.S.
Italy is ready to test body scanners on flights to the United States from Rome and Milan in the wake of the failed bomb attack on an American flight to Detroit from Amsterdam, ANSA new agency said on Monday.
The testing scheme was set to start Monday at Rome's Fiumicino airport and Milan's Malpensa airport. Civil Aviation Authority ENAC chief Vito Riggio said installation of the "millimetric electromagnetic wave" scanners is expected to begin at Fiumicino Tuesday.
Though there has been a debate over privacy issue after the government decided to install body scanners in the airports, Italy is among the first European countries to try out the new scanners, which are expected to come on line within several months.
