A look at Republicans seeking a Washington return
---
TOM CAMPBELL: A 10-year congressman, Supreme Court law clerk and California financial director, he is seeking the Republican Senate nomination against one-time Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore. The winner of the June 8 primary faces Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.
---
RICHARD POMBO: The former rancher lost his congressional seat after 12 years in 2006, as Democrats cast him as an example of the corrupt culture in Washington. Now, the top target for environmental activists, Pombo is looking for a second act; Democrats are quick to point out he took cash for disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
---
ROB SIMMONS: A former CIA officer and aide on Capitol Hill, Simmons won a House seat in 2000 and established a moderate record. He lost his 2006 re-election bid by 83 votes - out of almost a quarter million ballots cast - and is now in a primary fight against former wrestling executive Linda McMahon for the open Senate seat in Connecticut.
---
DAN COATS: The veteran lawmaker served in Washington a combined 18 years in the House and Senate, then as President George W. Bush's ambassador to Germany. Twenty-one years after leaving Capitol Hill, Coats said Obama's direction for the country prompted his bid to return to the Senate. He's seeking the GOP nomination in a race to replace Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, who is retiring.
---
JOHN HOSTETTLER: A darling of conservatives in southwest Indiana, the trained engineer came to the House in 1994's wave and lost his 2006 bid to the popular county sheriff, Democrat Brad Ellsworth. Since leaving office, Hostettler wrote a book and maintained contact with his supporters and now is challenging Coats in the Senate primary.
---
MIKE SODREL: Indiana's tough Ninth District is again looking at a rematch between its former congressmen, who have faced each other every two years since 2002. Mike Sodrel and Baron Hill are familiar foes for the House seat in the southeast corner of the state, with Sodrel claiming only one win. Sodrel, like many of these potential Republican returners, faces a primary.
---
TIM WALBERG: The one-term Michigan congressman won his seat in 2006 before being defeated in the 2008 election, which drew scores of new voters to the polls to support President Barack Obama. The former pastor is hoping for another wave, this time in his favor.
---
CHARLIE BASS: The former congressman from New Hampshire won his seat during the 1994 GOP tide and lost in 2006 when Democrats mounted a comeback. If he survives a challenging primary from tea party favorite Jennifer Horn, he could benefit from a third wave of electoral frustration and add to his 12-year career on Capitol Hill.
---
STEVE PEARCE: The former Air Force pilot and Vietnam veteran won his bid for Congress in 2002 from New Mexico; he chose to seek a Senate seat in 2008 instead of re-election. Pearce fell short to Sen. Tom Udall and now is looking to return to the House seat in which he served for six years.
---
STEVE CHABOT: The former educator and attorney who won his first term in the House during the 1994 Republican sweep is looking for a rematch against the 2008 challenger who narrowly defeated him. The southwest Ohio congressional district is one both parties are watching as Chabot faces a rematch with freshman Democratic Rep. Steve Driehaus, who backed Obama's health care overhaul.
---
ROB PORTMAN: The former U.S. trade representative and White House budget director - both Cabinet positions under President George W. Bush - is looking to return to Washington to fill the seat of retiring Republican Sen. George Voinovich. Portman won a House seat in a 1993 special election and served for 12 years.
---
MIKE FITZPATRICK: The former House member narrowly lost his Pennsylvania seat in 2006 to Patrick Murphy, an Army veteran who served in Iraq. Fitzpatrick first won his seat in 2004 and lost it by about 1,500 votes out of almost a quarter million cast just two years later.
---
PAT TOOMEY: The former head of the fiscally conservative Club for Growth, Toomey served three terms in the House and became a favorite of anti-tax groups. He challenged Sen. Arlen Specter - then a Republican - during the 2004 primary; Specter switched parties ahead of the 2010 midterm elections after Toomey signaled another primary challenge.
