Pawlenty: Give states flexibility on education

WASHINGTON (AP) - Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said the United States cannot succeed if its education policy leaves children unprepared for the work force and urged Washington to give states more flexibilities.

Pawlenty, a likely 2012 Republican presidential candidiate, on Monday discussed education policy with business executives at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce headquarters. Pawlenty criticized Washington-centered education policies that he argues prescribe solutions without taking into account regional differences for costs and values.

Pawlenty is not seeking another term in the Minnesota governor's office this year and already has made visits to crucial states that fall early on the nominating calendar.
