AGE - 62.

CAREER - Joined Texaco Inc. out of college as a sales trainee and held several marketing and management positions with the nation's second-largest oil company. Was named president of Texaco USA in 1994 and became Texaco's chairman and CEO in February 2001 when it was acquired by Chevron Corp.

Hired as Chairman and CEO of United on Sept. 2, 2002, as the airline was struggling to avoid a bankruptcy filing. United filed for Chapter 11 protection on Dec. 9, 2002, emerging more than three years later.

FAMILY - Married, two children.

EDUCATION -Bachelor's degree in international relations, University of South Carolina, 1970.
