Tyson posts 2Q profit after loss a year ago

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) - Meat producer Tyson Foods returned to profitability in its second quarter on improvements in its chicken business and higher beef and pork revenue.

The results topped analysts' estimates, and its shares rose 2.5 percent in pre-opening trading.

Tyson CEO Donnie Smith says he expects his company will do even better in the second half and likes the way its third quarter is going as the summer grilling season gets started.

Tyson reported net income of $156 million, or 42 cents per share, in the three months ended April 3. That's a reversal from a net loss of $119 million, or 32 cents per share, a year earlier.

It says revenue climbed 10 percent to $6.92 billion.

Analysts expected earnings excluding items of 34 cents per share on revenue of $6.54 billion.
