8 scientists share $1 million Kavli Prizes

OSLO, Norway (AP) - Eight scientists from the U.S. and Europe have been honored with the $1 million Kavli Prizes for work in astrophysics, neuroscience and nanoscience.

The prize jury says the 2010 awards recognize innovations in telescope design, research into the chemistry behind brain activity and breakthroughs in studies of extremely tiny structures.

Thursday's announcement was made in Oslo and broadcast at the World Science Festival in New York.

The astrophysics award was shared by Britain's Raymond Wilson, American Jerry Nelson and Roger Angel, a dual British and U.S. citizen.

Americans Nadrian Seeman and Donald Eigler won the nanoscience award while German scientist Thomas Suedhof will split the neuroscience prize with Americans James Rothman and Richard Scheller.
