Congo group accuses soldiers of killing animals

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - An environmental group is accusing Congolese soldiers of killing more rare wild animals in a national park in Congo's volatile east.

Bantu Lukambo of Innovation for Development and Environmental Protection said Monday soldiers killed the animals in Virunga National Park in February while stationed in the area to fight rebels. Their toll includes seven hippos, two elephants, two chimpanzees and four baboons. The report also accused soldiers of illegal fishing and logging.

Army Col. Philemon Yav says the army has launched and investigation and will punish anyone found guilty of poaching.

Virunga National Park is home to an array of rare animals, including 200 of the world's 720 remaining mountain gorillas.
