Alaska vet determining if 2 wolves killed jogger

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - An Alaska wildlife veterinarian will examine whether two wolves shot by officials this week were the animals that killed a teacher out jogging alone along a rural village road.

The wolves, shot from a helicopter, matched the descriptions of wolves seen at the site where 32-year-old special education teacher Candice Berner was attacked near Chignik Lake on the Alaska Peninsula.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that veterinarian Dr. Kimberlee Beckmen will test the bites of the wolves as well as DNA to see if they're the ones that killed Berner.

The wolves will also be tested for disease, including distemper and rabies.

Chignik Lake is a fishing village some 475 miles southwest of Anchorage.
