Hawaii inmate sues state, private prison operator

HONOLULU (AP) - A Hawaii inmate who claims she was raped by two guards at a private prison has sued the state and prison operator Corrections Corporation of America.

The woman says in the lawsuit filed Monday in Honolulu that she was sexually assaulted in June 2008 at the Otter Creek Correctional Center in Wheelwright, Ky.

The woman and her husband are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole for a 1997 kidnapping and murder.

The lawsuit alleges the state of Hawaii knew other women had been sexually assaulted at the prison but didn't protect the safety of the inmates.

A similar lawsuit was filed by another female inmate from Hawaii in October.

At least six prison workers have been indicted in the case.
