Milbank Tweed Hadley McCloy has become the latest well-known American law firm to open an office in Brazil, luring the former head of Shearman & Sterling's practice to oversee its new Sao Paolo outpost.

Joining Andrew Janszky there will be another Shearman & Sterling attorney, Tobias Stirnberg, Bloomberg reports.

Brazil, which has the largest economy in Latin America, has been a magnet to U.S.-based law firms recently: DLA Piper; Mayer Brown; and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett have all set up or expanded offices there within the last six months, the news agency notes.

A law firm press release provides additional details.

"Milbank has developed a very strong practice in infrastructure finance, capital markets and M&A throughout Brazil, and in Andrew, as the head of our proposed new office, we will have an attorney who has unusual strengths in all these areas," says the firm's chairman, Mel Immergut, in the release.

"Our clients have been asking us to establish an office in Brazil for some time now ... and clearly this is the right time, in terms of Brazilian economic growth, for us to be present to assist our clients in that country," continues Immergut. "Andrew and Tobias have worked together as a team on some of the most important and successful transactions in Brazil, and we look forward to having the expertise and experience of that team added to the strengths that Milbank already offers clients in Brazil.”
