A professional matchmaker says finding suitable prospective partners for lawyers can be difficult, given their penchant for intellectual argument and their tendency to analyze things.

Lisa Clampitt of VIP Life helps find matches for high-earning lawyers, doctors, financial analysts and entrepreneurs. Above the Law spoke with Clampitt after encountering difficulties with its own matchmaking attempts, profiled in a series of “Courtship Connection” columns.

Clampitt confirmed that lawyer-to-lawyer matches can be difficult. Relationships can be "way too intense" when argumentative lawyers are matched with lawyers of like personalities, she told the blog. Similarly, analytical skills can be a detriment when applied to scrutinize a potential partner. “Lawyers can bring skepticism and caution to a date that can sometimes be a little off-putting at first glance,” she said.

She told ATL that a great partner for a lawyer would be someone who is more laid-back, creative and spontaneous, but who also appreciates the lawyer’s critical mind. “When setting up a lawyer, it is actually helpful to pick matches that have complementary characteristics that help to create balance,” she said. “A more artistic and creative energy can be a great match for a more rational/analytical personality type.”
