The last time Dan McGrath won the Long Island marathon, in 2008, he had to go back to the University of Notre Dame for a law school exam the next morning.

But yesterday the 27-year-old New York practitioner was on home turf when he beat the heat and humidity to win again with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 44 seconds, reports the Explore LI blog of Newsday.

He had the lead all the way from the nine-mile mark.

"Today was one of the tougher days. I would've liked to have run faster," McGrath, of Lynbrook, told Newsday after the race.

Slower runners who hadn't reached the 10-mile mark within two hours and 18 minutes--that is to say, on pace for a six-hour finish--were diverted by course officials to the half-marathon, the newspaper says.
