Court seems likely to let jilted lover appeal

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court seems likely to allow a woman who tried to get back at her husband's pregnant lover with toxic chemicals to challenge her federal anti-terrorism conviction.

The high court heard arguments Tuesday from Carol Anne Bond of Lansdale, Pa. She was sentenced to six years in prison after spreading around toxic chemicals to hurt her husband's mistress.

Bond's lawyers say the federal government should not have been allowed to charge her with a chemical weapons violation, a law intended to deal with rogue states and terrorists. They say it should be a state matter.

But lower courts have said that Bond can't challenge her conviction under the 10th Amendment because generally only states are harmed when the federal government encroaches into state powers. Justices were skeptical.
